Summary[]
A strange UFO was spotted crashing into the ocean not far from the coast of California. With Admiral Walter Tobin on board, the Seaview is sent to investigate. The submarine is sucked into a vortex caused from the alien ship and is severely damaged. The UFO sends out a small mini saucer and it attaches itself to the Seaview access hatch. Viewing this as an invitation, Admiral Nelson boards the mini saucer and he is taken into the UFO. Inside, Admiral Nelson discovers an alien that looks exactly like himself. The alien threatens that unless he can leave Earth the planet will be destroyed. Admiral Nelson returns to the Seaview and obtains fuel for the alien, and the visitor leaves.
Background Information[]
- This is the first episode involving extra terrestrials. The notion of having the alien assume the form of the person he is speaking with was used again in "Day Of Evil". Footage of the alien ship crashing in the ocean was also used in that episode.
- The opening shots of the space craft flying over the city and terrifying the population, were from the 1951 film The Day The Earth Stood Still. The model used in shots filmed for the episode was the same prop used in the motion picture.
- Adam Williams plays the sub's CPO; Henry Kulky does not appear as Curly Jones in this episode.
Memorable Lines[]
- Crane: "I always said mermaids make lousy housekeepers."
- Crane: "I hope they remember they were treated as friends."
- Nelson: "They'll remember all right. I wonder if we will."
